The commanding poplar tree that takes up the majority of the canvas on Gustav Klimt's High Poplar was a favorite subject of the artist. He painted it over and over, in many seasons and light conditions. In High Poplar, the tree appears mid-summer, complete with blossoms and a ripened field. The scene depicts a poplar near Lake Attersee in northern Austria, where Klimt often spent his summers. Klimt (1862-1918) was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession, and is best known for his works depicting the overtly erotic. However, the artist also had a strong love of landscape painting, and his landscapes make up about a quarter of all of his paintings. Like his contemporary Monet, Klimt favored relatively simple outdoor scenes.
